2 Spiral Notes – Immune System Response
The Immune System is a network of cells, tissues, and organs that work together to protect the body. The cells involved are white blood cells, or leukocytes, which come in two basic types that combine to seek out and destroy disease-causing organisms or substances.  Important Terms: Antigen -________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Pathogen - ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Antibody - ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Antibodies combine chemically with substances that the body recognizes as alien, such as bacteria, viruses, and foreign substances in the blood. WBC - ________________________________________________________________________ 1st Line of Defense (Outside the Body): Skin, ____________________, Sweat, _________________; Inflammatory Response – Rash, _____________________, Sneezing 2nd Line of Defense (Inside the Body) - Immune Response Type of Cell Job of Cell ____________________: Type of WBC; Eats antigens, eats pathogens bound to antibodies, eats infected cells (phagocytosis) ____________ Cells: Reads, recognizes antigen (bad guy) shape; Tells B-Cells/Macrophage about antigen shape ____________ Cells: Creates (makes) an “army” of antibodies (good guys) to find antigen
