1 CLONING

2

3 What is cloning? Is a natural process that is repeated daily in nature
Bacteria grow by producing clones of itself. This is called Binary Fission. Twinning occurs when a zygote divides into separate cells.

4 Binary Fission Bacteria clone themselves every 20 minutes.
This is how they make you sick so quickly. Animation

5 Twinning With identical twins, one egg separates into two fetuses.
They share DNA, and a placenta. Twin Formation

6 Only one parent Cloning is a process of forming identical offspring from a single cell or tissue. The clone is genetically identical to that parent.

7 Cloning Animals Dolly the sheep
Animals are cloned by using a somatic cell Somatic Cells are any cell In the body other than sperm or egg cells This is called: Somatic Cell Nuclear Transfer In order to clone an animal, the DNA is inserted into a host egg cell.

8 Dolly Info The sheep named Dolly (July 5, February 14, 2003) was the first mammal to have been successfully cloned from an adult cell. She was created at the Roslin Institute in Scotland and lived there until her death nearly seven years later. Scientists did not announce her birth until February 22, 1997, however.

11 Dolly then had three more lambs in 1999
She was euthanized due to progressive lung disease common to older sheep who have been housed inside.

12 What are the missing steps? 1 2 3 4 5
Somatic cell removed from sheep to be cloned 1 Egg cell removed from donor Nucleus removed and discarded 2 Nucleus removed and kept Electric Shock Nucleus and empty egg cell fuse 3 4 Mitosis 5 Implant into surrogate mother Cloned sheep is born
