1 Antibiotics

2 Antibiotics are antimicrobial agents produced by microbes
Pharmaceutical companies purify the drugs and distribute it to pharmacies

3 Penicillin – produced by a mold Penicillium notatum.
It stops the synthesis of peptidoglycan G+ usually sensitive G- resistant Selectively toxic to bacteria

4 Ampicillin Semisynthetic penicillin
Chemical structure of penicillin is changed such that it can penetrate the outer membrane. Usually both G+ and G- are sensitive

5 Chloramphenicol Produced by Streptomyces
Inhibits protein synthesis on the 70S ribosomes Not as selectively toxic to bacteria as penicillin. Used too long or high concentration of the drug is used, can cause aplastic anemia. Bone marrow suppression.

6 Streptomycin Tetracycline Erythromycin Streptomyces – inhibit protein synthesis 70S ribosomes Erythromycin cannot penetrate the outer membrane

7 Gentamicin Micromonospora
Inhibit protein synthesis on the 70S ribosome

8 Sulfanilamide Competitive inhibitor Inhibits folic acid synthesis.
