2. Dogmatism – the tendency to lay down principles as incontrovertibly true, without consideration of evidence or the opinions of others

3. Universal Example
Tony: “I have the greatest mind ever to exist! I made a 98% on my test!”
Steve: “Oh, but I heard Reed scored a 100%.”
Tony: “ That is highly unlikely. Did you not hear me? I made a 98%.”
Tony is being dogmatic because he refuses to believe anyone could score higher on the test than him, even though someone actually did.

4. The Crucible Examples
Proctor: “But if she say she is pregnant, then she must be! That woman will never tell a lie, Mr. Danforth.” – Act 3, pg. 212
This is dogmatism because Proctor refuses to believe that his wife could ever lie. Anyone could lie if it meant saving their own life.

Danforth: “And do you know that near to four hundred are in the jails from Marblehead to Lynn, and upon my signature….And seventy-two condemned to hang by that signature?” – Act 3, pg. 210
This is dogmatism because Danforth uses his high status to justify imprisoning and condemning hundreds of people. He is oblivious to the possibility that he could have made the wrong call and condemned/imprisoned innocent people.
