2. Underground Railroad
The Underground Railroad was not really underground, and not really a railroad.
The Underground Railroad was a series of escape routes and hiding places to help free slaves from the South.

3. Runaways People who fled slavery were called runaways.
Runaways could head for the North and Canada or go south to Florida, Mexico, or the Caribbean.
Runaways walked at night to avoid being seen.
If they were to be caught, they would be punished and returned to slavery.

4. Stations & Conductors
Blacks who were free gave most of their money and did as much work as they could to support the Underground Railroad.
Members of the Railroad gave food, clothing, and medical aid to runaways.
Members often hid slaves until it was safe to move on.
Hiding places were known as stations.

5. Harriet Tubman
Conductors helped by guiding runaways to the next station.
The most famous conductor was a woman named Harriet Tubman.
Harriet Tubman escaped slavery in Maryland.

6. Harriet Tubman
After escaping slavery, Tubman returned to dangerous territory 19 times to lead others to freedom.
Harriet Tubman helped about 300 people escape to the North.
