16 Jesus’ Prayers on the Cross and thereafter
Teammates March 25, 2018 Lee Bennett

17 Context for today’s lesson
The Last Supper The Upper Room Discourse The Garden of Gethsemane The arrest, trials, flogging, condemnation The journey to Golgotha, crucifixion

18 Final Utterances of Jesus on the Cross
1.-Father, forgive them-Lk. 23:34 2.-Woman, behold your son/mother-Jn. 19:26-27 3.-My God… why have you forsaken me? 4.-Today you will be with Me…-Lk. 23:43 5.-I am thirsty.-Jn. 19:28 6.-It is finished.-Jn. 19:30 7.-Father, into Thy Hands I commit my spirit.-Lk.23:46

19 Prayers of Jesus Father, forgive them… (who were ‘them?’ Why does He ask the Father to forgive them?) My God, my God, why have You forsaken Me? (Why did He quote Psalm 22:1 here? Was He forsaken or did He just feel like it?)

20 Prayers of Jesus (contd)
It is finished. (What was finished?) Father, into Thy Hands I commit My spirit. (Why was He now able to address God as Father? Is this a request or a statement?)

21 A Quick Look at Jesus in heaven
“Who will bring a charge against God’s elect? God is the One who justifies; who is the One who condemns? Messiah Jesus is He who died, yes, rather Who was raised, Who is seated at the right hand of God, Who also intercedes for us.” Romans 8:33-34

22 What else is happening in heaven?
“…for the accuser of our brethren has been thrown down, who accuses them before our God night and day.”-Rev. 12:10

23 Some “so what’s” from this study
Even Jesus had to ask the Father to forgive those who were killing Him. Do we think we are stronger than Him? Jesus never prayed for Himself either on the cross of afterwards. For whom did He pray and for whom should we be praying?

24 Wrap Up: A Blessed Easter
Coming on April 8, 2018 Closing song: The Statler Brothers “Since Jesus Came Into My Heart”
