2 What is apartheid and how did it start
A legal racial segregation enforced by the National Party Government in South Africa between 1948 and In which non-whites were separated by color and race. And non-whites also lost their rights thanks to whites being in power. All began after WW 2 by an all white government gained power they started enforcing policies of segregation.

Segregation of blacks and white in South Africa Blacks and white couldn't marry Whites had their own hospitals, schools, and neighborhoods Made blacks illegal to work In sharecropping Forced to live in homelands Blacks would get very little and the worst land to farm Force to work as migrant labor with low paid and was illegal to strike Non whites also had to carry a passbook or an ID everywhere They also had curfew Were separate in 4 categories whites, blacks, Indian , and colored There were 148 apartheid laws

5 Accomplishments of Nelson Mandela on apartheid
One of the major achievements is the ANC. Became president after apartheid Equality in south Africa under his leadership. Gave right to non-whites and the ability to vote. Got rid of apartheid laws and segregation against non-whites Unified two racial groups and he also created justice for his people. And he also made huge impact in the world with his actions.

6 Nelson Mandela Former president of South Africa (1994-1999)
Member of the African National Congress (ANC) party in 1940 Leader of both peaceful protests and armed resistance against the white minority’s oppressive regime in a racially divided South Africa. Thanks to his actions made him the face of apartheid movement His punishment for his actions was prison for nearly 3 decades.

7 The African National Congress (ANC)
A national liberation movement to unite the Africans to help with the struggle of fundamental political, social and economic change. On January 8, 1912 representatives, church organizations, and other individuals in Bloemfontein and formed the ANC. The Republic of South’s Africa's governing social democratic political party Uses nonviolent when fighting for civil rights. Group of blacks who thought that whites were treating them unfairly because they controlled south Africa.

May General election starts apartheid National party wins general election and makes laws restricting non whites from rights June 1952 ANC starts the Defiance Campaign Volunteers begin peaceful resistance and protests against laws EX: sitting in white people benches 1953- The Bantu Education act is passed A law separating people in education places such as school December Nelson Mandela is arrested for treason Nelson, anti-apartheid, and several people arrested for protesting against apartheid charged with treason, but after 4 years found non guilty 1959- Separate Homelands are created for non whites Government passes law to separate non-whites making them move to homelands called Bantustans. Government did this to stop non whites from being citizens of south Africa March 21, Sharpeville massacre 69 are killed Apartheid requires people to carry a passbook containing personal info. When protesters are arrested and brought to Sharpeville PD without passbooks a riot starts making police kill 69 people. August 5,1962- Mandela arrested for treason again He is arrested for bombing government targets and is sentence to life in prison Feb 2, President Frederik Willem e Klerk ends the ban of the ANC Even though he supported apartheid he lifts the ban of the ANC in 1990 Feb 11, 1990 – Mandela released from prison After 27 years in prison nelson freed thanks to President Frederik Willem de Klerk May 10, 1994 – Mandela becomes president of south Africa In the country’s first election where blacks and white could vote Nelson Mandela is elected as president of south Africa. Becoming the first black president in south Africa.
