1 The Physical Processes behind Seismic Hazards
Learning Objective: To identify the different types of earthquake quakes and the impacts they have

2 Explain your answer using evidence to support.
Japan 2011 earthquake – liquefaction – what impacts did this have? Nepal 2015 earthquake - landslides – what impacts did they have? We’ve watched the videos focusing on these secondary impacts, now read the article you’ve been allocated. Highlight and annotate with thoughts and questions. Why were the impacts of these two seismic events more severe as a result of the secondary impacts? Explain your answer using evidence to support. PEE. (Japan liquefaction) (Nepal landslide)

3 Tsunamis? As we read through pages 20-21, make notes showing how tsunamis form and the impacts they can have…

4 Homework: Due Thursday 22nd September
Go to the USGS latest earthquake page Select 1 Day, All magnitudes worldwide. Download data into a .csv file Using the Excel spread sheet, work out the median and interquartile range.

5 Feedback from cover work…
What does this map show?

10 Sea floor spreading Sea-floor spreading is the process in which the ocean floor is extended when two plates move apart As the plates move apart the rocks break and form a crack between the plates Magma rises through the cracks and seeps out, cools and forms new ocean floor
