There’s An Alligator Under My Bed
by Mercer Mayer “There used to be an alligator under my bed. When it was time to go to sleep, I had to be very careful because I knew he was there. But whenever I looked, he hid….or something. So I’d call mom and dad. But they never saw it. It was up to me. I just had to do something about that alligator.”

Stop the Sun by Gary Paulsen
“Terry Erickson was a tall boy, starting to fill out with muscle but still a little awkward. He was on the edge of being a good athlete, which meant a lot to him. He felt it coming too slowly, though, and that bothered him. But what bothered him even more was when his father’s eyes went away.” “It was easily the most embarrassing thing that ever happened to him.” He wanted to walk away, but something made his feet move forward.”

And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie
“His brain was working. Which way – which method – talk her over – lull her into security – or a swift dash – And then he sprang, quick as a panther. Automatically Vera pressed the trigger. Relief possessed Vera – enormous, exquisite relief.”

Try these: The Contender by Robert Lipsyte
All the way up the aisle, people stood up and shook their fists and tugged at his robe and cheered. He kept his eyes straight ahead, and his mouth tightly closed. He was afraid that he might throw up. The sound of the left hook against Griffin’s jaw, the dull, meaty, thunk, echoed in his mind all the way home. He heard it while trying to sleep, saw him flop on the canvas like a rag doll… The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis It was an unpleasant evening. Lucy was miserable and Edmund was beginning to feel that his plan wasn’t working. Peter and Susan were beginning to feel that Lucy really was out of her mind.

The Tell Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe
It is impossible to say how first the idea entered my brain; but once conceived, it haunted me day and night. I love the old man. He never wronged me. He had never given me insult. For his gold I had no desire. I think it was his eye! Yes, it was this!

(1) To Build a Fire by Jack London At the man’s heels trotted a dog, a big native husky. The animal was supressed by the tremendous cold. It knew that it was not time for traveling. Although many had warned the man not to travel in such harsh conditions, he believed himself to be capable of the journey. As he turned to continue on, he spat. There was a sharp, explosive crackle that startled him. He spat again… and in the air, before it could fall to the snow, it froze. He knew that at fifty below spittle froze on the snow, but this spittle froze in the air. (2)The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton I stretched out and used Johnny’s legs for a pillow. Curling up, I was thankful for Dally’s jacket. It was too big, but it was warm. Not even the rattling of the train could keep me awake. I went to sleep in a hoodlum’s jacket with a gun lying next to my hand.

(3) The House of the Scorpion:
He (Tom) sneered at Matt and said, “You’re too dumb to talk, you’re just a stupid clone.” The rotten orange burst apart all over Tom’s face. It’s moving, it’s moving!” Pulp dripped from his chin as wiggly worms dropped into his collar. “I’ll get you for this!” He shrieked and ran away. Matt felt satisfied and peaceful. He couldn’t help the warm sensation of pleasure at having zinged Tom.
