1 More equal societies work better for everyone
Inequality Matters More equal societies work better for everyone

2 ARLA - The world has always had huge inequalities
ARLA - The world has always had huge inequalities. We may all be born equal as human beings, but often due to circumstances outside our control, we have very different opportunities. By chance, some countries have huge amounts of valuable resources like gold or oil. In our geography lessons this term we have been looking at these inequalities and how they have been getting worse I most countries around the world over the last 20 years.

3 People live longer in more equal societies
GEORGIA - These rising inequalities are really bad for society. The axis on the bottom shows how unequal different countries are, you can see that the USA and Singapore are the most unequal, and Japan and Finland are the most equal. The level of equality seems to affect how long people live. This research shows that more equal societies tend to have longer life expectancies. This research shows that more equal societies tend to have longer life expectancies

4 Children do better at school in more equal societies
GEORGIA - Here we have the same countries on the graph, and we still have USA on the far right. Children in more equal societies tend to do better at school, in Maths and reading

5 People in more equal societies are less likely to use illegal drugs
GEORGIA - … and more equal societies suffer less from social problems. Here, for example, you can see how unequal societies have some of the worst drugs problems.

6 LYDIA - Not only has the gap between rich and poor countries been growing, the gap in this country is also getting bigger, with wages rising fastest for the already-wealthy, and poorer more vulnerable groups being hit hard by spending cuts.

7 Inequalities in Life expectancy: 81 – Frognal and Fitzjohns
Life expectancy: 72 – St. Pancras and Somers Town We saw how big the inequalities are. Even in Camden there is a life expectancy difference of a huge 9 years.

8 GEORGIA - We saw a documentary about two girls who live in the same street in London. One was rich and one was poor. Both of their lives are being affected by the gap of inequality. The rich girl was afraid to go out alone, and the poor girl was living in very poor housing and struggling to get her brother, who has learning difficulties, a place in primary school. What we found was that their fear and prejudice was fueled by their own stereotypical ideas of each other.

9 Inequalities between Camden and St. Albans
London ARLA - Two weeks ago went on a trip to St Albans to compare the inequalities between this market town outside London and Camden

10 We did our own surveys investigating the differences between St
We did our own surveys investigating the differences between St. Albans and Camden.

11 We found the levels of deprivation in terms of income, crime, environment and education were worse in Camden than St. Albans.

12 We concluded that a more diverse society means a more interesting area in general. Honestly, St. Albans is a boring place. Walking down the High Street, you did not see a single person of a different ethnicity to white. Think about Camden being only of white people. How boring it would be. Ethnic minorities make for an interesting environment. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend St. Albans as a place to visit.

13 What can we do? Support the work of The Equality Trust Write to your local Councillor and MP requesting the government sticks to fairer pay guidelines Join a local equality group Most people think the Chief Executive of a large company should be paid no more than Most people think the Chief Executive of a large company should be paid no more than six times the pay of a typical factory worker. the pay of a typical factory worker. Pay gaps are, on average, 15 to 1 in local authorities, 10 to 1 in large charities and a huge 262 to 1 in big multinational companies. Organisations like the Equality Trust and My Fair London are campaiging for fairer pay. Go to their websites: have a look at what they say. Equality matters.
