3 Wedding Rituals All wedding rituals usually have two things in common:
A Ceremony held in public with witnesses, and; Legal requirements that must be fulfilled. Public ceremonies were important in preliterate societies. In the absence of written records, such ceremonies served to fix in the minds of all who witnessed them that the couple were legitimately married.

4 Religious and Marriage Rituals
Up until the tenth century it was not uncommon for marriage to take place by mutual consent. At first, it consisted only of a benediction by a priest… then it became customary for the newlyweds to attend a church service after the wedding. By 1215 the church had become the authority of publically marry people.

5 Modern Marriages Nowadays a wedding may be performed by any person who has the legal qualifications to do so such as a judge or an official, and no religious involvement is necessary unless the couple desires it. Legal requirements still include a license, a brief ceremony of some sort during which the couple signify their consent before a minimum number of witnesses, and the signing of a marriage document.
