At 4am in December in his cold garage, Don Schoendorfer began to tinker at his workbench.
For 3 hours before work every morning he experimented with different tubes, chairs and wheels, determined to create the world’s cheapest wheelchair.

The chair had to traverse mountains, swamps and deserts and endure heat and frost, and yet be dirt cheap.
Finally he hit on using the white, plastic garden chair, with inexpensive bike tyres and some light metal tubing from his local DIY store.

Back in 1977 he and his wife had visited Morocco and had witnessed a disabled woman dragging herself across the road using her fingernails because of the searing heat.
It was at that moment that Schoendorfer, a mechanical engineer by trade, decided to help.
