Every country involved in World War I used some form of propaganda poster to advance their cause. In 1914 much of the world was still illiterate. In 1914 England did not have a large professional army or even have a policy on national military service in place England needed to build a very large army very quickly. They were just about to conduct one of the largest recruitment drives in history.

However, not everyone was motivated by pride and patriotic duty. Some asked, “What’s in it for me?” Recruitment posters showed the personal benefits of joining the military.

When America joined the war in 1917 they had a very small and ill-equipped armed forces unit. If America was to join the war effort they would also need to undergo a massive recruitment drive and raise a ton of money very quickly.

Now that you have learned what propaganda is and how it was used during the First World War it is your turn to create some propaganda. For this assignment you will create two pieces of propaganda. First: Using a single sheet of copier paper and the colored pencils and markers provided create a piece of WWI propaganda which covers one of the major topics of World War I.
