1 Respecting and valuing each other
Thought for the Day Respecting and valuing each other

2 We value and respect everyone
We each bring our backgrounds, beliefs, values, talents and behavior standards to our school. Taken together, these define how we treat others and how we expect to be treated. They define what makes each of us unique. To respect diversity is to recognize each individual for his/her unusual and unique talents. These talents are as complex as the individual they belong to. Learning how to deal with diversity involves acquiring some new skills. In fact, succeeding in school, and life, is very difficult for those who are unable to collaborate with a diverse group of people. Diversity by itself doesn't make a group strong or successful. Dealing with diversity in a healthy, productive and proactive manner, however, can help us all to succeed and become better people. How can being respectful of others help us to work together?

3 Diversity Diversity includes: People of different genders
People with diverse ethnic, racial and cultural backgrounds People of different ages and experiences People with different abilities People with different sexual orientations People who practice different religions People who speak different languages People with different family structures People with different educational backgrounds People with different life experiences What behaviors help you feel that you are respected? What do people do that can make you feel that you aren't being respected? How can you positively inform others of the importance of your values to you? How can you positively show others that you value their beliefs? How can you show respect to others?

4 What do these quotes suggest?
Reflection We live in a diverse nation made up of many different cultures, languages, races, and backgrounds. That kind of variety can make all our lives a lot more fun and interesting, but only if we get along with each other. And to do that we have to respect each other. In addition to the list above, here are some ways we can respect people who are different from us. • Try to learn something from the other person.
• Never stereotype people.
• Show interest and appreciation for other people's cultures and backgrounds.
• Don't go along with prejudices and racist attitudes. What do these quotes suggest?

5 the lowest rates of child mortality in the world.”
Scottish Baby Boxes Babies born in Scotland will be gifted “baby boxes” from New Year’s Day 2017, the country’s First Minister has said. Nicola Sturgeon said the policy, has been used in Finland, would be a “symbol of a belief in a level playing field” for all children. Finland has been giving out care packages to all expectant mothers for 80 years. The boxes, which include around 80 items useful for babies, have been credited with cutting infant mortality and raising life chances. The boxes contain items such as baby clothes and nappies. Babies sometimes sleep in the boxes. “We promised a baby box of all essential items for all newborns. It’s a policy borrowed from Finland where it’s contributed to the lowest rates of child mortality in the world.” Do you think this is a good idea? What can we learn from this? What does this tell us about equality?
