Mitosis Review
2
DNA NOTE: The shape of DNA is called a DOUBLE-HELIX The molecule that contains the information that determines the traits a living things inherit In eukaryotes, DNA is found in the nucleus
3
Contains DNA and proteins
Chromosomes Chromatin Contains DNA and proteins Compacted chromatin, consists of 2 chromatids (held together by a centromere)
5
Cell Cycle
6
Interphase DNA is duplicated
The part of the cell cycle that is not dividing. The cell grows about twice the size it was when it was first produced. The cell engages in normal life. DNA is duplicated
7
Prophase Chromatin in the nucleus condenses and becomes chromosomes; The membrane around the nucleus breaks down Interphase Prophase
8
Metaphase Chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell Prophase
9
Anaphase The chromatids separate and are pulled to opposite side of the cell; Each cell ends up with a complete set of chromosomes Metaphase Anaphase
10
Telophase A new nuclear membrane forms around each group of chromosomes; Cell now two identical nuclei Anaphase Telophase
11
Cytokinesis The division of the parent cell’s cytoplasm. During cytokinesis the cell membrane pinches inward between the new nuclei
