 # Using the Metric System

## Presentation on theme: "Using the Metric System"— Presentation transcript:

Using the Metric System
Metrics is a system of measurement based on the power of 10

LENGTH – Distance from one point to another
Units of measurement: LENGTH – Distance from one point to another M or m for meter

MASS – the amount of matter in an object
G or g for grams

VOLUME – the amount of space an object occupies
L or l for liter L x W x H = Volume

TEMPERATURE – the amount of heat an object has
degrees Celsius (oC)

M/G/L thousand hundred ten 1 one-tenth one-hundredth one-thousandth

King Henry died, my good lord, drinking chocolate milk.

Kilo – 1,000 times larger than a meter
milli - 1,000 times smaller than a meter Hecto times larger than a meter centi – 100 times smaller than a meter Deka - 10 times larger than a meter deci – 10 times smaller than a meter

CONVERTING METRIC UNITS
When moving to the left, move your decimal to the left 100 m = __________ km When moving to the right, move your decimal to the right 100 km = __________ m

1 M = _____________ km 1000 mm = _________ m 48.0 ml = ___________ Dl
( __how many___ space(s), ___which direction___) left 1000 mm = _________ m (________ space(s), ________) 48.0 ml = ___________ Dl (now try rest on your sheet)

IS THIS CORRECT? Ex: 1 meter = ? cm cm are 2 spaces to the right of M SO 1.00 meter = 100 cm

Ex: 5 millimeters = ? Km IS THIS CORRECT?
km are 6 spaces to the left of mm SO 5 millimeters = 5,000,000 km

dg are 4 spaces to the right of kg SO 2.74 kilograms = 27,400 dg
IS THIS CORRECT? Ex: 2.74 kilograms = ? dg dg are 4 spaces to the right of kg SO 2.74 kilograms = 27,400 dg

hl are 2 spaces to the left of l SO 0.063 liters = 6.3 hl
IS THIS CORRECT? Ex: liters = ? Hl hl are 2 spaces to the left of l SO liters = 6.3 hl

IS THIS CORRECT? Ex: 842.9 centigrams = ? Dg
Dg are 3 spaces to the left of cg SO centigrams = cg
