Students should write/summarize the starred characteristics. Print 1 or 2 of these per table for students to use throughout the class. They will use these characteristics to determine what their party would support for each issue discussed today.

½ of the class will be assigned as “Federalists” ½ of the class will be assigned as “Democratic Republicans” You will receive a printout of the Federalists/DemReps chart – please don’t write on this or take it with you! For each issue, students will determine what their assigned political party would want to do about it.

President: John Adams ( ), Fed Background: Made it difficult to immigrate or become a citizen Made it illegal to criticize the government Made it easy to deport foreigners Federalists: Supported as necessary to prevent growth of DRs and to limit criticism of Federalist officials Dem-Reps: Opposed, along with the enlarged army, as a threat to citizen’s individual liberties. At your table, decide what you think your assigned political party would want to do about this… Don’t write anything down yet! The group member with most pets will share your response. Criticized by Jefferson and Madison in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, where doctrine of nullification was first explained.

9 Alien and Sedition Acts What happened?
The Alien/Sedition Acts passed in Congress, but DRs wrote the VA/KY Resolutions to nullify (declare) Alien/Sedition Acts invalid in those states Criticized by Jefferson and Madison in the Kentucky and Virginia Resolutions, where doctrine of nullification was first explained.

Background: bought from France (Napoleon) for $15 million doubled the size of the United States (to the West) Federalists: opposed - feared the LP would weaken the power of the New England States and did not want agrarian powers increase. Dem-Reps: supported - wanted land for farmers to expand (even though this purchase increased federal power). At your table, decide what you think your assigned political party would want to do about this… Don’t write anything down yet! The group member who has ever lived outside of Lexington will share your response.
