1 Range of PoS coverage Date: 2008-05-09 Authors: May, 2008
November 2005 doc.: IEEE /0499r1 May, 2008 Range of PoS coverage Date: Authors: Notice: This document has been prepared to assist IEEE It is offered as a basis for discussion and is not binding on the contributing individual(s) or organization(s). The material in this document is subject to change in form and content after further study. The contributor(s) reserve(s) the right to add, amend or withdraw material contained herein. Release: The contributor grants a free, irrevocable license to the IEEE to incorporate material contained in this contribution, and any modifications thereof, in the creation of an IEEE Standards publication; to copyright in the IEEE’s name any IEEE Standards publication even though it may include portions of this contribution; and at the IEEE’s sole discretion to permit others to reproduce in whole or in part the resulting IEEE Standards publication. The contributor also acknowledges and accepts that this contribution may be made public by IEEE Patent Policy and Procedures: The contributor is familiar with the IEEE 802 Patent Policy and Procedures < ieee802.org/guides/bylaws/sb-bylaws.pdf>, including the statement "IEEE standards may include the known use of patent(s), including patent applications, provided the IEEE receives assurance from the patent holder or applicant with respect to patents essential for compliance with both mandatory and optional portions of the standard." Early disclosure to the Working Group of patent information that might be relevant to the standard is essential to reduce the possibility for delays in the development process and increase the likelihood that the draft publication will be approved for publication. Please notify the Chair as early as possible, in written or electronic form, if patented technology (or technology under patent application) might be incorporated into a draft standard being developed within the IEEE Working Group. If you have questions, contact the IEEE Patent Committee Administrator at Gabor Bajko

2 November 2005 doc.: IEEE /0499r1 May, 2008 Coverage range of a PoS Coverage of a PoS may vary greatly, depending on the radio technology, frequency, power, etc. A GSM BS coverage is from 100m up to 30km Same variation for cdma bts, wimax bs, etc. A a/b/g is usually ~100m 802.11n is up to 250m It is not possible to guess the coverage range from the radio technology or the other parameters currently available in the spec Gabor Bajko

3 November 2005 doc.: IEEE /0499r1 May, 2008 802.21v10 Page 55, line 61 says: “the NGHB_RADIUS value (defined in Table C- 15), if provided, indicates the radius of the neighborhood, centered at the indicated location, within which all available access networks will be included in the list of neighboring networks. ” Even if the precise location of the PoS is included in the response, the MN can not accurately determine if a PoS at location X has coverage across the whole area specified by NGHB_RADIUS, or only at the center or the perimeter of it. 4 Proposal Define a PoA specific ‘Coverage Range’ Information Element
November 2005 doc.: IEEE /0499r1 Proposal May, 2008 Define a PoA specific ‘Coverage Range’ Information Element The IE would contain the coverage range of the specific PoA in meters For certain PoAs the value can be a default one (802.11a/b/g), for the other PoAs the value varies, and the correct value has to be configured Should be a mandatory IE in the PoA specific container, when PoA location present Applicability Would allow the MN to determine the precise network coverage of a PoA or a set of PoAs (e.g. belonging to the same carrier or using the same technology) in a point X or in a certain area It would also allow the MN to build a carrier or technology based coverage map using only information downloaded from IS Is text needed to describe applicability?
