1 Qualitative Graphs 3.20

2 Examples of Qualitative Graphs
What do you notice?

3 Qualitative Graphs notes
Numerical values are not included The shape is more important than the values Often used to show the motion of an object

4 Characteristics to Note
Direction y-values can be increasing, decreasing, or staying the same Often used to show when object is moving away from or toward a point

5 Characteristics to Note
Steepness Shows how high the rate of change (slope) is Often used to show speed of object

6 Characteristics to Note
Zero Slope Shows when y-value is not changing Often used to show when object has stopped moving

7 Example Kendra leaves home to ride her bike. She travels for several minutes at a medium speed. She then stops for a short while to check her pockets when she realizes that she dropped her money. She speeds back toward home for a few minutes until she finds the money on the street. She stops for a moment to pick it up and secure it in a safe place. She is relieved so she continues on at a slow, relaxed pace.

8 Example Several minutes at medium speed Stops for short time
Speeds back for a few minutes Stops for a moment Continues on at a slow pace

9 Example 2 Karl sprints to the other side of a track, stops to breathe, and then walks the rest of the way around the track Distance from Starting Point
