People with disabilities are America’s largest minority group. There are an estimated 56.7 million Americans with a disability, 19% of the population or 1 in 5. For businesses/employers that equals untapped employees and customers. Projections indicate that by the year 2030, 69 million Americans will have a disability, or over 22% of the population. In February 2017, 20.4% of people with disabilities ages 16+ were in the labor force, as compared to 68.4 percent of those without disabilities. The World is Changing “The Hidden ‘D’ in Diversity is Disability” --Ron Parker, SVP, Global Diversity, Pepsico The number of people with disabilities is on the rise due to many factors, including an aging population. There are 77 million baby boomers – it is estimated that 52% of the boomers will become disabled. The global population of people with disabilities is more than 1 billion. As a comparison, China’s population is 1.3 billion. Technological advances give people with disabilities more access to a fuller life and that includes work.

10 Project SEARCH is a unique transition to work program that is a collaboration between a host business, local school districts, state vocational rehabilitation agencies, and community service partners. Currently over 425 Project SEARCH programs across the globe. Fifth Third Bank is the only financial institution that runs Project SEARCH. Leadership Celebrating Twelve Years at Fifth Third Bank 3 Programs – Madisonville, OH., Cincinnati, OH., and Grand Rapids MI. Sustainability 274 interns have participated in Project SEARCH Program since 2005. Success 32 Project SEARCH intern alumni are now Fifth Third Bank employees Talent

People First Language Put the person first: “person with a disability,” rather than “disabled person.” Avoid outdated terms like “handicapped,” or “retarded.” Avoid “confinement” or “confined to…” Say “person who uses a wheelchair.” The wheelchair is what enables the person to get around; it is liberating, not confining.
