3 In Times Like These… “Is there any word from the LORD?”
Jeremiah 37:17 NIV

4 In Times Like These… 26 His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, “I will once more shake not only the earth but heaven as well.”

5 In Times Like These… 27 The words “once more” plainly show that the created things will be shaken and removed, so that the things that cannot be shaken will remain.

6 In Times Like These… 28 Let us be thankful, then, because we receive a kingdom that cannot be shaken. Hebrews 12:26-28 GNB

7 what can the righteous do?”
In Times Like These… “If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” Psalm 11:3 ESV

8 What Can the Righteous Do?

9 What Can the Righteous Do?
They can Pray!

10 PRAY! I urge you, first of all, to pray for all people. Ask God to help them; intercede on their behalf, and give thanks for them.

11 PRAY! 2 Pray this way for kings and all who are in authority so that we can live peaceful and quiet lives marked by godliness and dignity.

12 PRAY! 3 This is good and pleases God our Saviour, 4 who wants everyone to be saved and to understand the truth. 1 Timothy 2:1-4 NLT

13 PRAY! “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of…”

14 PRAY! In the Second World War, King George VI called for National Days of Prayer – the results were astonishing

15

16 The Miracle of Dunkirk

17 The Miracle of Dunkirk “335,000 men had been carried out of the jaws of death and shame”. Churchill called it “a miracle of deliverance”.

18 The Fall of the Berlin Wall

19 The Fall of the Berlin Wall

20

21 The End of the Cold War Adrian Pabst of the Guardian “without Christianity, the cold war could not have ended peacefully… the extraordinary events that brought down the Iron Curtain are perhaps best described in terms of the victory of religious resistance”

22 What Can the Righteous Do?
They can Preach the Gospel!

23 PREACH! I solemnly urge you in the presence of God and Christ Jesus, who will someday judge the living and the dead when he comes to set up his Kingdom: Preach the word of God. Be prepared, whether the time is favourable or not. 2 Timothy 4:1-2 NLT

24 PREACH! For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes… Romans 1:16 NIV

25

26 PREACH! John Wesley travelled over 250,000 miles, mostly on horseback and preached over 44,000 sermons

27 PREACH! A street mission which began in Reading.
In the last year, 7000 have responded to the Gospel and 2000 ordinary Christians have been trained as evangelists in 8 areas of the UK.

28 PREACH!

29 PREACH! But have reverence for Christ in your hearts, and honour him as Lord. Be ready at all times to answer anyone who asks you to explain the hope you have in you, but do it with gentleness and respect… 1 Peter 3:15-16 GNB

30 What Can the Righteous Do?
They can Respond with a Different Spirit!

31 Respond with a Different Spirit!
“To triumph fully, evil needs two victories, not one. The first victory happens when an evil deed is perpetrated; the second victory when evil is returned” Miroslav Volf

32 Respond with a Different Spirit!
Mohammed: “fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them…” Surah 9:5 Jesus Christ: “Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matthew 5:44

33 Respond with a Different Spirit!
2 Kings 6:8-23 NLT 8 When the king of Aram was at war with Israel, he would confer with his officers and say, “We will mobilize our forces at such and such a place.” 9 But immediately Elisha, the man of God, would warn the king of Israel, “Do not go near that place, for the Arameans are planning to mobilize their troops there.”

34 Respond with a Different Spirit!
10 So the king of Israel would send word to the place indicated by the man of God. Time and again Elisha warned the king, so that he would be on the alert there. 11 The king of Aram became very upset over this. He called his officers together and demanded, “Which of you is the traitor? Who has been informing the king of Israel of my plans?”

35 Respond with a Different Spirit!
12 “It’s not us, my lord the king,” one of the officers replied. “Elisha, the prophet in Israel, tells the king of Israel even the words you speak in the privacy of your bedroom!” 13 “Go and find out where he is,” the king commanded, “so I can send troops to seize him.” And the report came back: “Elisha is at Dothan.”

36 Respond with a Different Spirit!
14 So one night the king of Aram sent a great army with many chariots and horses to surround the city. 15 When the servant of the man of God got up early the next morning and went outside, there were troops, horses, and chariots everywhere. “Oh, sir, what will we do now?” the young man cried to Elisha.

37 Respond with a Different Spirit!
16 “Don’t be afraid!” Elisha told him. “For there are more on our side than on theirs!” 17 Then Elisha prayed, “O Lord, open his eyes and let him see!” The Lord opened the young man’s eyes, and when he looked up, he saw that the hillside around Elisha was filled with horses and chariots of fire.

38 Respond with a Different Spirit!
18 As the Aramean army advanced toward him, Elisha prayed, “O Lord, please make them blind.” So the Lord struck them with blindness as Elisha had asked. 19 Then Elisha went out and told them, “You have come the wrong way! This isn’t the right city! Follow me, and I will take you to the man you are looking for.” And he led them to the city of Samaria.

39 Respond with a Different Spirit!
20 As soon as they had entered Samaria, Elisha prayed, “O Lord, now open their eyes and let them see.” So the Lord opened their eyes, and they discovered that they were in the middle of Samaria. 21 When the king of Israel saw them, he shouted to Elisha, “My father, should I kill them? Should I kill them?”

40 Respond with a Different Spirit!
22 “Of course not!” Elisha replied. “Do we kill prisoners of war? Give them food and drink and send them home again to their master.” 23 So the king made a great feast for them and then sent them home to their master. After that, the Aramean raiders stayed away from the land of Israel.

41 Respond with a Different Spirit!
Romans 12:19-21(NLT) 19 Dear friends, never take revenge. Leave that to the righteous anger of God. For the Scriptures say, “I will take revenge;     I will pay them back,”     says the Lord.

42 Respond with a Different Spirit!
20 Instead, “If your enemies are hungry, feed them. If they are thirsty, give them something to drink. In doing this, you will heap burning coals of shame on their heads.” 21 Don’t let evil conquer you, but conquer evil by doing good.

43 Respond with a Different Spirit!
2 Corinthians 10:3-4(NIV) 3 For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. 4 The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds.

44 What Can the Righteous Do?
They can: * Pray for God’s mercy * Preach the Gospel * Respond with a Different Spirit!
