1 Empirical Evidence Write on the RIGHT side

2 Three Branches of Science
Biology/ Life Science: the study of living things Geology/Earth Science: the study of the Earth (what it’s made of and what shapes it) Physics/Physical Science: the study of non- living matter and energy. Chemistry is often included in physical science

3 Gathering Empirical Evidence
Scientists gather empirical evidence In the field In the lab (Note: remember that empirical evidence is all of the measurements and data scientists collect in support of a scientific explanation)

4 Fieldwork Gathering information outdoors, conditions cannot be controlled. This is known as fieldwork Biologists and Geologists do fieldwork. Allows scientists to collect data in an original setting

5 Application What might a biologist use fieldwork for?
What might a geologist use fieldwork for?

6 In the Laboratory Scientists have the opportunity to collect data in a controlled environment and perform experiments Unlike in fieldwork, in a lab scientists can control things such as temperature, lighting, and the surrounding air What might a chemist use a lab for?

7 Reflection/Empirical Evidence Activity
Take out the item you brought from home Using the 4 items at your table (yours & the others’ at your table) record empirical evidence about each item in your data table Glue your data table on the left side (reflection) Write and Answer the following question beneath your data table: Do scientific ideas change? Why or Why not?
