3 Why didn’t anyone save them?
The Nazis tried to keep the killings a secret from the world Most people in Nazi occupied lands did little to help the Jews A small number of people did risk their lives to protect Jews But, the full horror of the HOLOCAUST was not known until after the war ended in 1945

4 How many people were killed?
Estimate = 6 million Jews were killed Estimate = 5 million others were killed Probably 1 million children Countless other suffered through torture and scientific experiments Drug testing Disease testing Transplantation Sterilization Weapon testing Nearly 1,000 years of Jewish history, culture, and ancestry had been destroyed

The Nazi war crime trials were held in Nuremberg, Germany Nazi leaders were held accountable for their violations of basic human rights to the Jews “Violating the rules of war” “Crimes against humanity”

6 Similar trials also took place in Japan
What was the outcome? The trials ran from Nov to Oct. 1946 19 out of 22 defendants were found guilty 12 of those received death sentences 7 defendants were sent to prison Similar trials also took place in Japan The trials sent a message that gross violations of human rights would not be accepted
