4. Midwest Region- Land and Water
1) Central Plains are flat, gently rolling land with very few trees with grass covering much of the land. The soil is extremely fertile.
Great Plains- the soil is not very fertile and there is less rainfall. The land is higher, drier, and rockier.

2) The Badlands is an area of the Great Plains that is very hot and dry. The land is useless for farming and many human purposes.

Key Facts 1) Largest river system in the United States. 2) It collects water from 31 of the 50 states. 3) It is the fourth largest river system in the world.

1) People are always watching the weather. The winters are long and harsh.
2) Spring brings hailstorms instead of rain. People must watch out for tornados and be prepared for these very dangerous storms.
Buildings have to be built very strong. People have storm cellars and neighborhoods have warning sirens.

1) There are many farms in this region. In Iowa, farms cover almost every inch of the state.

2) Detroit, Michigan is a major center for the automobile industry because of the amount of iron ore deposits. Most of the steel produced in the region is used to make cars and trucks.

Dairy Belt- Northern grasslands of Wisconsin, Michigan, and Minnesota
