2 Figurative Language - Purpose
Figurative language is not intended to be interpreted in a literal sense. Appealing to the imagination, figurative language provides new ways of looking at the world. It always makes use of a comparison between different things. Figurative language compares two things that are different in enough ways so that their similarities, when pointed out, are interesting, unique and/or surprising.

3 Figurative Language – Simile (uses “like or “as” to compare things)
The car raced down the road as quick as lightning.

4 Figurative Language – Metaphor (says that one object is actually something else)
The students were busy beavers in order to get the room clean in time for P.E.

5 Figurative Language – Idioms (a phrase that cannot be figured out literally)
"I thought I could finish this report within one month, but it looks like I have bitten off more than I can chew.“ Unable to finish.

6 Figurative Language – Personification (to give human-like qualities to an animal or object)
The leaves danced in the air as they gently drifted to the ground on the windy afternoon.
