2 Metaphor Definition: Comparison WITHOUT using “like” or “as”.
Example: “ You are the sunshine in my day”

3 Simile Definition: Comparison using “like” or “as”.
Example: Playing tag, Dean felt like a dog chasing his tail. My temper exploded like a bomb.

4 Personification Definition: Giving human qualities to non- human things. Example: The wind whistled through the tree branches. Example: The shelf seemed to actually grab the dust and hold on to it.

5 Hyperbole Definition: An over exaggeration to prove a point
Example: Finally, my temper exploded like a bomb. Example: It felt like it took thousands of years to finish college.

6 Alliteration Definition: A repetition of the same initial consonant sounds. Example: The bouncing baby babbled as he drank his bottle. Example: I rode down the Red River on a raft.

7 Onomatopoeia Definition: Words that imitate sound.
Example: The car’s engine roared as the driver sped off.

8 Allusion Definition: A reference to a person, place or event from lit, sports, history, movies or art. Example: Everyone cake Kate, Loren and Emma the Three Musketeers. Example: Chase sure was an Einstein today.

9 Example: When Cam was caught, I knew we were all in hot water.
Idiom Definition: A group of words whose collective meaning is very different from the literal meaning. Example: When Cam was caught, I knew we were all in hot water.
