1 Title of Notes: AZ water use p. 6 RS

2 learning about how we use and manage water in AZ.
Learning target I can list the three main water uses in AZ and describe water management. Today I am… learning about how we use and manage water in AZ. So that I’ll be able to… understand how we use water here and current/future water challenges. I’ll know I’ve got it when… I can list the 3 main water uses and describe 1 way that our water is managed.

3 Why survey AZ water use? Population projections Population is growing.
Year Arizona Phoenix Metro 2015 6,758,200 4,482,900 2016 6,890,200 4,587,100 2017 7,032,200 4,698,000 2018 7,179,200 4,812,000 2019 7,328,000 4,927,100 2020 7,476,800 5,042,100 2021 7,625,100 5,156,900 2022 7,773,600 5,272,000 2023 7,922,400 5,387,600 2024 8,071,700 5,503,700 2025 8,221,800 5,620,800 2026 8,371,300 5,737,700 Population is growing. Water is becoming more scarce.

4 Human carrying capacity
A land’s carrying capacity will always be determined by its access to usable water.

5 Where does AZ water come from?
Surface water Groundwater Reclaimed (effluent)

7 Agricultural uses: Farming
Water use #1 Agricultural uses: Farming # of farms has dropped!

8 Agricultural uses: Farming in AZ
Water use #1 Agricultural uses: Farming in AZ The southern half of the state is good for year round crop growth in irrigated areas. Cattle and sheep are the main agricultural commodities. Most of the state’s farming occurs in the alluvial basins of the Colorado, Salt, Verde and Agua Fria rivers.

9 How is agricultural water managed?
Dams for water storage and controlling rivers.

11 Sustainability triangle
Agricultural uses: Farming in AZ Economic: Agriculture is a $9.2 billion industry for the state of Arizona.

12 Water use #2 Industrial uses: Manufacturing and building

13 Water use #2 Industrial uses: Manufacturing and building
Arizona’s major industrial use: Mining and power generation (Arizona supplies over 60% of the nation’s copper.) Palo Verde Nuclear generating station (the only nuclear plant in the world to use recycled water in its cooling ponds.)

14 How is industrial water managed?
About 70% of the water used for power is effluent. Reclaimed water can be used for golf courses, industrial water cooling, etc.

15 Water use – Sustainability triangle
Industrial uses Economic: Arizona tourism industry brings $17.7 billion yearly. Social: The state has many golf courses, parks, and shopping locations. Environmental: The state’s golf courses and parks provide vegetation which reduces heat.

16 Water use #3 Personal use
Every day uses: Homes, drinking water, swimming pools, lawns

17 Water use #3 Personal use
Municipal use is estimated at about 25% and much of this is used to irrigate landscapes. Figure 1. Water uses for the average U.S. household (total = 255 gallons per household per day).

18 How is personal water managed? READ THIS SLIDE
The Arizona Department of Water Resources manages the state’s water and is the enforcement agency for issues relating to water rights. Missions range from licensing well drillers, assuring the safety of dams, and developing mandatory conservation requirements for all water use sectors to protecting the state’s Colorado River allocation and facilitating Indian water rights negotiations among tribal representatives, local interests, federal and state officials and members of Congress.

19 How are residents encouraged to conserve lawn water use?
Xeriscaping (native plants) Avoid watering during peak heat

20 How do we manage water? Dams, conservation, reclamation, recharge aquifers

21 Arizona Tap Water (15 mins)
WE WILL WATCH THIS VIDEO IN CLASS!

22 Reading Pg Write down two important facts or definitions from the reading. Bullet point the facts and write the page number above them.

23 Create a water use cartoon Create your own full page cartoon do not use mine!
Left side of page 4 Should be next to Water Use notes
