1 The Earth Inside and Out

2 Inside the Earth Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner Core

3 Layers of the Earth 1.Core- made up of iron and nickel
Inner core Solid material Outer core Liquid 2.Mantle- thickest layer 3. Crust- thin layer of rock

4 Continental Drift Theory

5 Tectonic Plates

6 Summarize what you have seen
What is continental drift theory? Why do certain areas of the earth have more earthquakes and volcanoes?

7 WAYS THAT THE TECTONIC PLATES CAN MOVE

8 PLATE CONVERGENCE When two plates converge, mountain ranges are formed by the edges of the plates folding upward. The Himalayas are an example of plate convergence or collision.

9 Subduction SUBDUCTION

10 DIVERGENT PLATES OCEAN FLOOR SPREADING OCCURS WHERE TWO UNDERWATER PLATES SEPARATE, AND THE MAGMA BENEATH FILLS IN THE CRACKS TO FORM NEW OCEAN FLOOR SURFACE

11 Faults Faults exist along the edges of the tectonic plates.
Along faults is usually where most earthquakes occur.

13 On and Above the Earth

14 Fast Facts 71% of the earth is covered by oceans.
The Pacific is the largest. Ocean water moves by currents, waves, and tides. Currents are like rivers in the ocean. Waves are caused by wind. Tides are caused by the gravity of the moon.

15 FRESH WATER TRIVIA LAKES HAVE MORE THAN 95% OF ALL FRESH WATER.
LAKE BAIKAL IN RUSSIA HOLD NEARLY 1/5 OF THE WORLD’S FRESH WATER. MOST SALTWATER LAKES WERE ONCE FRESH, BUT BECAME SALTY WHEN THEY BECAME CUT OFF FROM THEIR SOURCES.

16 HYDROLOGIC CYCLE
