5.- HYDROXIDES Any chemical compound containing one or more groups, each comprising one atom each of oxygen and hydrogen bonded together and functioning as the negatively charged ion OH- KOH and Ca(OH)2 have different formula: in potassium hydroxide, one hydroxyl group is attached while in calcium hydroxide two hydroxyl group are present

5.1. MULTIPLICATIVE PREFIXES NOMENCLATURE Hydroxides are combinations of a metal with -OH. The hydroxyl has oxidation number -1; the metal has a positive oxidation number. mono- di- tri- tetra- etc... (+N) (-1) Me (OH)n METAL HYDROXIDE The name of the ELEMENT is placed first. Then the word HYDROXIDE is written. It is preceded by the prefix mono-,di-, tri-, tetra-, etc ..., which indicates the number of OH- in the molecule. (the prefix is deleted if there is no doubt), SODIUM HYDROXIDE Na OH NaOH Fe OH Fe(OH)3 IRON TRIHYDROXIDE OH IRON DIHYDROXIDE Fe Fe(OH)2 OH

Here are some examples involving representative metals
Here are some examples involving representative metals. Because each of these metals has only one possible oxidation state, which is equal to its group number in the periodic table, we don’t have to specify the metals positive charge in the name. These elements can have more than one positive ion, so the name must indicate which one it is. You can determine the positive charge by seeing how many hydroxide ions, each with a charge of minus one, it takes to make a neutral compound.
