1 Homework 1. States of Consciousness Packet due on Monday, November 30
Tuesday, November 24, 2015 Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Do Now: Homework 1. States of Consciousness Packet due on Monday, November 30 2. Exam on Sensation and Perception/States of Consciousness on Friday, December 4

2 Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears.
Color Vision Two Major Theories

3 Trichromatic Theory Three types of cones: Red Blue Green
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Trichromatic Theory Three types of cones: Red Blue Green These three types of cones can make millions of combinations of colors. Does not explain afterimages

4 Color-Deficient Vision
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Color-Deficient Vision People who suffer red-green blindness have trouble perceiving the number within the design They lack functioning red- or green- sensitive cones, or sometimes both

5 Stupid Nike Uniforms Wreaking Havoc on Colorblind NFL Fans

6 Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears.

7 Opponent-Process theory
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Opponent-Process theory The sensory receptors come in pairs. Red/Green Yellow/Blue Black/White If one color is stimulated, the other is inhibited.

8 Ten Mind Blowing Optical Illusions
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Ten Mind Blowing Optical Illusions

9 Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears.
We hear sound WAVES The height of the wave gives us the amplitude of the sound. The frequency of the wave gives us the pitch if the sound.

10 The Intensity of Some Common Sounds
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. The Intensity of Some Common Sounds Decibels are the measuring unit for sound energy

11 Transduction in the ear
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Transduction in the ear Sound waves hit the eardrum then anvil then hammer then stirrup then oval window. Everything is just vibrating. Then the cochlea vibrates. The cochlea is lined with mucus called basilar membrane. In basilar membrane there are hair cells. When hair cells vibrate they send impulses up the auditory nerve to the thalamus. It is all about the vibrations!!!

12 Place Theory and Frequency Theory
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Pitch Theories Place Theory and Frequency Theory

13 Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears.
Place Theory The pitch we hear depends on the place where the cochlea’s membrane is stimulated So some hairs vibrate when they hear high and other vibrate when they hear low pitches.

14 Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears.
Frequency Theory The pitch we hear depends on the rate of nerve impulses traveling up the auditory nerve All the hairs vibrate but at different speeds.

15 Sensorineural Deafness
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Types of Hearing Loss Conduction Deafness Sensorineural Deafness Hearing loss caused by damage to the mechanical system that conducts sound waves to the cochlea (such as a damaged eardrum) You can replace the bones or get a hearing aid to help. The hair cells in the cochlea get damaged. Loud noises can cause this type of deafness. NO WAY to replace the hairs. Cochlea implant is possible.

16 Socrative You will now complete a group socrative quiz
Aim: students will be able to understand the structure and function of their eyes and ears. Socrative You will now complete a group socrative quiz Make sure to make your group name the color that is on the index card given to you Write the name of all of your group members on the back of the index card
