2. The 4th Amendment
The fourth amendment was created to protect the people from being searched, including their property.
This amendment protects against unreasonable stops and searches such as being frisked or wiretaps.
The Fourth Amendment is in play unless there is probable cause supported by oath or affirmation.

3. Current Issue
NYPD’s stop and frisk plan started in early 2000’s, it was a plan to try and make New York streets a safer place, however it also went against The Fourth Amendment….
NYPD stopped anyone they felt were suspicious
Frisked them without reason in their own neighborhoods, or about their daily business
Let them go without apology
Forced to be frisked

4. NYC believes the plan will..
Creates a safe environment
Reduces crime
Cut the number of murders in half
Takes weapons off of the streets

5. Results/Criticisms of the plan..
No research has ever proven that the NYPD’s Stop and frisk program is effective.
Citizens were put under stress and humiliation to be found innocent in the end
The outcome of making a safer place was very little.
Bad use of judgment to decide who to stop, a lot of the time was based on race.
If victims questioned/resisted force was doubled

6. By the Numbers..
NYPD’s Stop and frisk program has been found to be ineffective
In 2003 for every 266 New yorkers one gun was recovered
In 2011 for every 879 stops one gun was recovered
Over 600,000 innocent New yorkers were stopped
87% of the New yorkers stopped were Blacks or Latinos
Black and Latino New Yorkers made up 24% of the population in Park Slope, but 79% percent of stops.
…..The program is suppose to make us safer but it doesn’t.
