1 Rear Commodores’ Report
Mike MacDonald & Mike Stanley Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

2 The Year in Review Floods, Floods, and more Floods. Maintenance
Projects on land Projects afloat Projects that sink Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

3 Floods, Floods, and … Extensive – and expensive – flood damage
$600 Electrical damage + over $200 trash Extensive – and expensive – flood damage Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

4 Maintenance of existing infrastructure
Moorings (new floats, shackles, swivels) Hydraulic trailer (new chains, hydraulic filter) Pontoon boat (repair leaks, add bilge pump) Electrical repairs and water system repairs Mast trees (arms stiffened) Yard cleanups (over 300 lbs scrap iron) Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

5 Projects on Land Draining the Tanzer swamp Repair mast crane
Invited three bidders; much more expensive than projected; financed by putting other work on hold Widened the storage area by several feet near road Huge project with lots of work, successful. Repair mast crane Engineer never got back to us. Minor repairs received good comments. Add new mast trees and fix old ones Did prep work for widening mast tree area using fill from Tanzer digout; couldn’t afford to complete it. What we did will save money for next year. Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

6 Projects afloat Floating docks Pontoon boat Repaired and floated again
Added a bilge pump Didn’t need to add flotation Patched most of the leaks. Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

7 Projects that sink Installed 6 new moorings Mooring Database upgraded
Pontoon boat will float the moorings! Mooring Database upgraded What is there, where it is, maintenance history. Mapped the mooring field “fairly” accurately. Pulled up as much slack as we could (Snags may cause inaccuracy) Measured slack above water and depth of water GPS positions taken Final map with distances will be on web site. Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

8 More on Moorings Before season 15 blocks needed
6 for Fredericton Base 3 for DH Base 3 for new mast crane stabilization 3 for members. Roll of rope, 15 rings Flood put DH out, new mast crane design? FPFURT was supposed to inspect field in trade for dock space, no inspection Inspections needed as a budget item. 67 members, 57 member boats, 45 boats hauled this fall, have 37 moorings, need 60 moorings. Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

9 Experience with the rope moorings
Existing length too long, wrapping on keels and snagging debris on bottom. Try new length as height of upper wharf + 5 ft. Problem with sinking them, the lengths of poly between mooring has enough additional flotation to float nylon line. Add a few shackles and they sink. Much easier to deal with than chain for pontoon boat crew. Need a rope lifting method. Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

10 Mast crane New winch New mast control lines
Removed swivel to decrease twisting Twist will always be a problem Engineer’s report never came back We need a professional design Cannot afford to do anything with it next year. Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

11 A look at next year Full Budget will be approved next spring
Overview of maintenance and projects Stuff that needs to be done Assuming same budget level as this year Red items are wanted to do but can’t at this budget level. Do not want to increase fees again next year. I have to pay them too! Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

12 A Regular Maintenance Budget
We need to start adding a regular replacement program into the budget: 1 (2-3) mooring ball, most shackles & Swivels 1 (2) spool of poly for sinking moorings 1 (2) hydraulic line(s) on trailer per year a regular replacement of tires on trailer mooring inspections replacement of mooring lines yard cleanups and fuel budget for pontoon boat and hydraulic trailer Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

13 Projects on land New potable Water system
Repair and straighten fence (can’t hire it out) Triennial electrical inspection Repair upper crib wall (axed) Mast Tree project Mast Crane project (axed) Paint and repair the blue shed (third try). Start acquiring a flood barrier over five years (Delayed) Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

14 Mast tree project Existing mast tree line parallel to river.
Make it parallel to road and we get space for 3-4 big boats. Two parallel rows with roof and hooks for tarp “sides” to enclose it for winter. Flood barrier on river side. Extend electrical and water services. Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

15 Projects afloat Pontoon Boat Docks (22 sections 15ft x 6ft = 330ft )
Depth sounder and winter cover (done) Cage to protect driver Rods to store mooring balls on boat (axed) Filter fittings for Hydraulic fluid on motor (axed) Maintenance on Outboard. Mechanism to lift rope moorings (axed) Docks (22 sections 15ft x 6ft = 330ft ) Repair and maintenance of existing Start a replacement program over 4 years with sections compatible with DH (6 sections in years 1 and 2 , 5 sections in years 3 and 4) (axed) three 30 footers or six 15 footers? Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

16 Projects that sink Replacement of 6 9 of existing chain moorings with rope, 6 4 year replacement goal. Add 6 12 moorings to the existing field, goal of 60 moorings in 4 2 years. Complete mooring field inspection Recovery of some lost moorings, hopefully. Investigate methods of launching boats (Crane or marine railway). Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

17 Lessons learned as RC A bigger job than two people can do in a volunteer capacity. Need to keep track of information better Need a better structure to be successful Small core of volunteers (30 people ~25 boats) Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

18 Rear Commodore Committee
Two Rear Commodores as Co-Chairs Each member of the committee would help the RCs in budgeting and execution RCs will be more managers than workers Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

19 Moorings Chair Ordering Rings, lumber for forms, rope…
Making forms (for concrete blocks) Arranging mooring blocks fabrication Splicing rope for mooring lines Installing new, spring raising, fall sinking Ensuring the inspections take place Pontoon boat maintenance Assist with budgeting and acquisition Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

20 Docks Chair Oversee dock replacement Recommend design for new docks
Order new docks, integrate with old Repair old docks Install in spring, remove in fall. Adjust during the season with water Assign dock space and police usage Assist with budgeting and acquisition Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

21 Yard Chair Organize the spring and fall work parties.
Organize smaller yard cleanups (monthly) Get rid of trash regularly (weekly) Make sure lawn gets mowed as needed Arrange the porta-pottie service. Assist with budgeting Maintenance and organizing of blue shed Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

22 Special Projects Chair(s)
One Person Per Project Does project from budget to completion Help from RC as required. This year’s projects Complete mast tree widening, repair, second row Fence straightening & Water system replacement Mast Crane(planning only) Launch system investigation Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018

23 Chairs to assist the RCs
Moorings Chair Docks Chair Yard Chair Special Project Chair(s) Mast trees Fence straightening and Water system replacement Mast Crane Launch system investigation Fall 2008 Fton Base RC Report 11/20/2018
