Evidence & Support Topic – Who ate the cookie? Evidence 1 – The cookie is gone. Support – Someone or something took the cookie because cookies cannot just disappear. (Explain meaning) Evidence 2 – The little girl has cookie crumbs on her face. Support – The crumbs on the little girl’s face show that she probably ate it. (Explain importance) Cinderella’s evidence that she was the missing princes = She had the glass slipper. Support = It fit!

Prompt: Write a TEST paragraph about the key characteristics of an ecosystem. Topic Sentence: The desert ecosystem has many characteristics. Deserts get very little rain. In order to be called a desert, an ecosystem has to get less than ten inches of rain each year. (Deeper information) Without very much rain, the desert can only support certain plants and animals. (Importance) Deserts have both very hot and very cold temperatures. During the day, the temperature can be over 100 while at night it can drop below freezing. (Deeper Information) These extreme temperatures are hard on plants and animals. (Importance) Deeper information – Be more specific. Importance – Ask yourself, “What does this fact affect? What difference does it make?”

Prompt: Write a TEST paragraph about how producers survive in a specific ecosystem. Topic Sentence: The producers in a desert ecosystem have to be strong to survive. Desert cactus have spines that help them survive. The spines are the pokey parts of the cactus. (Meaning) The spines help the cactus survive by keeping animals from trying to eat the cactus. (Importance) Desert shrubs have waxy leaves that help them survive. The wax on their leaves keeps the water inside the plant. (Deeper Information) This helps the shrub to survive when it does not rain for a long time. Definitions are a good way to explain meaning.

ADVANCED SUPPORT STOMP behavior affects our school in three ways. First, STOMP behavior helps people feel safe. By showing everyone respect, we help everyone feel like they belong. When everyone belongs, everyone takes care of each other. That helps everyone feel safe. STOMP behavior also keeps our school clean. Owning our behavior means taking care of what we have. When we take care of our belongings, everything stays clean. Finally, STOMP behavior makes people enjoy being here. At this school, we value positive attitudes and teamwork. When we make a difference, we make they whole school a better place to be. Safety is first because it is the most important. Importance Meaning Being safe and clean makes our school enjoyable.
