Phon Sound

euphony The quality of being pleasing to the ear, esp. through a harmonious combination of words or SOUNDS. When I listened to the jazz band play, I was moved by the melodious euphony of the music.

cacophony A harsh, discordant mixture of SOUNDS. Chaotic sounding noise. There is always a cacophony of barking dogs in my neighborhood when the UPS truck drives through.

symphony “SYM” = together, “PHON” = sound. An elaborate musical composition for full orchestra, typically in four movements, played by the musicians TOGETHER. The members of the orchestra played a symphony by Beethoven.

phonics A method of teaching people to read by correlating the SOUNDS of letters or groups of letters with their spelling. Many reading teachers use phonics to help children learn how to read.

microphone An instrument for converting sound waves into electrical energy variations, so the SOUND coming through them may be amplified, transmitted, or recorded. The soloists in the band use microphones to make sure that they can be heard over the rest of the band.

homophone Each of two or more words having the same pronunciation (SOUND) but different meanings or spellings, for example, new and knew, There are many homophones in the English language: bare and bear, tea and tee, flu and flew.

xylophone A musical instrument played by striking a row of wooden bars of graduated length with one or more small wooden or plastic mallets. Many children have toy xylophones that help introduce them to other musical instruments.

phonolite From the Greek “SOUNDing stone.” A fine grained volcanic rock the makes a metallic SOUND when struck. After the volcanic eruption, geologists were able to study many samples of phonolite.

antiphony Music sung or played alternately by different groups creates the sound called ANTIPHONY. For example, music sung in a round: row, row, row your boat. The chorus sang an antiphony during the concert, with one group starting and another group responding.

Antiphony example

aphonia The loss of ability to speak through disease of or damage to the larynx or mouth. “No SOUND” After his accident, the man suffered from aphonia and could no longer speak.
