1 On a separate sheet of paper:
Bell work 10/26/2015 On a separate sheet of paper: Explain why fossils are useful evidence to show that Pangaea once existed.

2 On an Expo… Which of these best describes the composition of the inner core of Earth? Liquid water and rock crystals Oxygen and carbon dioxide gas Liquid iron and nickel Solid nickel and iron

3 Which layer of Earth is made mostly of liquid metal?
Expo… Which layer of Earth is made mostly of liquid metal?

4 On an Expo… Under which of the following headings in a table of contents would the most information about Pangaea be found? How to Clean and Prepare Fossil Samples Alfred Wegener and Continental Drift The Movement of Glaciers All You Need to Know About the Asthenosphere

5

6 Goals: I can describe characteristics of the Earth’s three layers.
I can recognize that plates move continually at a rate of centimeters per year. I can describe the relationship between plate movements and earthquakes, mountain building, volcanoes, and sea-floor spreading. I can evaluate the impact of man’s use of earth’s land, water, and atmospheric resources.

7 Tectonic Plate Boundaries

8 Tectonic Plates…pieces of lithosphere that move around on top of the asthenosphere

9

10 Sea-floor Spreading: Process by which new oceanic crust forms because magma rises up then cools off (hardens)

11 Mid-Ocean Ridges: Chain of submerged mountains in the center of the Atlantic Ocean

12 Subduction: The sideways and downward movement of the edge of a plate into the mantle under another plate

13 Tectonic Plate Boundaries:
Tectonic plates can collide, separate, or slide past each other.

14 Plate Boundaries: Convergent Divergent Transform Plates collide
Plates divide Plates slide past each other Causes subduction, mountains, Volcanoes, Trenches Causes Sea-floor spreading, Mid-ocean Ridges, Valleys, Volcanoes Causes earthquakes

15 Tectonic Plate Map Activity:
Follow each of the steps below. Write your responses on a separate sheet of paper. Each member of the group will turn in their own sheet of paper with their own answers. You may work as a group as long as every member does their part and keeps up with their own responses. Use each other. Use your notes. Then, ask for help.

16 Let’s review… How do mid-ocean ridges support both the idea of continental drift and the theory of plate tectonics? Oceanic lithosphere is destroyed at mid-ocean ridges. New crust forms at mid-ocean ridges. Tectonic plates collide at mid-ocean ridges. The crust at mid-ocean ridges is old oceanic lithosphere.

17 Let’s review… Which of the following statements best explains the relative positions of the two landmasses above? The landmasses slid away from each other at a transform boundary. Subduction occurred, causing the land between the two landmasses to sink. Sea-floor spreading pushed the two landmasses apart. An earthquake split the tectonic plate in two, separating the landmasses.

18 Let’s review… Sea-floor spreading occurs at which of the following types of tectonic plate boundaries? Transform Convergent Divergent Strike-slip
