1 CHEMICAL REACTION NOTES

2 Essential Question: How do chemical reactions change the items I use?

3 Chemical Reactions Are examples of a chemical change (new material is created) Occurs when two or more substances react to create a new material. In a chemical reaction the atoms are rearranged into a new pattern forming a new molecule or substances. Show YouTube video

4 Modeling Chemical Reactions
2H2 + O2 → 2 H2O CH4 + 2O2 → CO2 + 2 H2O

5 Indicators or clues to a chemical reaction
Bubbling or Fizzing (gas is produced) A solid is formed (precipitate) Heat is produced (exothermic reaction) Drop in temperature (endothermic reaction) Light is produced (fire or fireworks) Sound is produced (explosion) Sometimes a color change

6 Chemical Equations Explains a chemical reaction using symbols to explain what happens. CuCl3 + Al → AlCl3 + Cu NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O Those substances on the left of the arrow are called the reactants Those substances on the right of the arrow are called the products produce Reactants → Products

7 Parts to a Chemical Equation
H2O2(l) + NaOCl(l) → NaCl(aq) + H2O(l) + O2(g) Reactants produces Products Yields Forms (aq) – solid dissolved in water (s) – solid (cr) – crystal solid (l) – liquid (g) - gas

8 Law of Conservation of Matter/Mass
Matter can not be created or destroyed it can only change form. The mass of the reactants is equal to the mass of the products The number and type of atoms in the products is equal to the number and type of atoms in the reactants. NaOH + HCl → NaCl + H2O Wood O2 → ash + soot + smoke
