1 Being Different, Belonging Together
KS2

2 Spot The Differences? Begin by showing the photos of the two faces. What differences can the children see? Encourage them to talk about possible differences in expression as well as obvious physical differences. Explain that when we meet people and talk to them we learn a lot from people's faces. Ask the children what they think it would be like if everyone looked the same.

3 6 Volunteers What differences are there between our school mates here?
What about now they have a mask on? The volunteers will now turn around with their backs to the audience and each one will silently place a neutral mask in front of his/her face (these should all be the same colour, but not necessarily white). When you tell them, they should all turn around to face the audience at the same time. The effect will be quite dramatic as the neutral mask transforms the person wearing it. Invite contributions from the audience. Are they now all the same? Encourage them to notice the differences, e.g. posture, clothes etc. What other ways are there to show that the children are different? For example, if we heard the masked children speak, or if we got to know them better, we could then find out their opinions and what they liked or disliked. Ask the children what it would be like if they all had to wear the mask all the time. Can they now give you a reason why difference is a good thing?

4 Exactly The Same School Playground
In Exactly The Same School, everyone would have to play with the same toys in the playground and there would be no choice about what to do.

5 Exactly The Same School Lunch Time
Everyone would have to have the same lunchbox, eat the same sandwiches and eat in the same ay at the same time.

6 Exactly The Same School Classroom
Everyone would have to use the same equipment like pencil cases, pencils, paints and colours.

7 Exactly The Same School Classroom
Everyone would also have to look the same, no one would be different. Would anyone still like to go to this school?

8 If so, it would mean no more choice in the playground or the lovely things you have to play with.

9 It would mean that you couldn’t have your favourite people on your lunchboxes or eat your favourite food because you would have to eat the same as everybody else.

10 It would mean you couldn’t pick the things you liked, like pencil cases or bags or your favourite colouring pencils.

11 What would it be like? What would the world be like if everyone looked exactly the same? How could you call the register if everyone looked identical and had the same name? What would happen if during 'show and tell' everyone told the same stories and brought in the same things to show?

12 It is great to be different!
So this is more what your school looks like to me and I think it looks lovely. Don’t all the children look happy? Show the class the picture of all the different children. What differences can they see? Remind them that people are also different in ways that we can't see. For example, we have different likes and dislikes, we follow different religions, live in different places, and have different skills and abilities.
