Blow or Flesh flies

Specific Classification
Kingdom : Animalia Phylum : Arthropoda Class : Insecta Order : Diptera Subclass : Pterygota Suborder : Cyclorrhapha Family : Calliphoridae

habits The blow flied have shining metallic colour (blue, bronze, green). Adult flies feed on liquefied protien or nectar, and live for a month or so. They breed in carcases or wound and sores of decomposing animals, deing attracted by odour of or living. Mature larvae usually leave the carcase or host to pupate in the ground.

Morphology The blow flied are small to medium sized insects, some smaller and others larger than the common housefly.

Life History Calliphora vicina. breeds in carcases and meat. The eggs hatch in 24 hours at 23 degree celsius. The larvae and pupal stages are completed in about 10 days.

Life Cycle

Harm (Damage) Infesttation of the tissues of living animals by the larvae of blow flies is called myiasis. Attack of blow fly larvae on the skin is termed cutaneous myiasis or strike. The blowflies which cause myiasis in domwstic animals are Cyrsomyia bezziana, Calliphora vivina and Lucilla cuprina. The skin cattle are the preferred victums. Chrysomyia bezzianz is the most common blow fly in india. It causes nasal, oral, eye, cutaneous and vaginal myasis in all kinds of live stock but generally in cattle. Lucilla cuprina causes “strike” in sheep.

Control (Management) Carcases should be burnt or treated with insecticides and buried. Wounds should be thoroughly cleaned on maggots removed and destroyed to prevent them from pupation. The larvae can be killed in situ by spraying the wound with chloroform watar that may make them leave the wound. Adult blow flies may be killed by methods used to destroy houseflies.
