1 IP Principles… First in Australia to launch a set of IP Principles that outline our approach for engaging with industry partners. Now adopted across all Australia Technology Network (ATN) Universities. Overview of UniSA IP Principles: We embrace partnerships with external parties who are positioned to create outcomes from our research. Our staff and student are encouraged and supported to engage with industry. Our partners are encouraged to own IP and drive the commercialisation process. Open access to template documents, policies and processes to provide a transparent framework. The IP Principles were designed to address the myth that Universities are difficult to work with, risk adverse and demanding of IP ownership. UniSA does not subscribe to this stereotype. The IP Principles were launched by Minister Birmingham in Sydney in 2016, and have been adopted by the Australia Technology Network (ATN) Universities. They are a pledge about how we will work with industry. We are transparent and all our IP documents are online for industry to see,

3 UniSA’s IP Policy Clarify the circumstances in which the University owns IP created by students, staff and external participants; Assign responsibilities for the management of University IP; Outline the identification and reporting requirements for University IP; Require that students and staff consider the proper use of IP owned by other parties; Require that students and staff consider the protection of University IP prior to discussing or otherwise publishing the results of research. The IP Policy describes the roles and responsibilities of UniSA staff and students. The aspiration is for entrepreneurial staff and students to feel supported rather than be hindered by UniSA’s approach to IP. What is important for UniSA Ventures is the policy and guidelines explain our role in this process. We are the service provider to help researchers through the process.

4 UniSA’s IP Guidelines Outline the role of UniSA Ventures in the assessment, protection and commercialisation of University IP; Outline services provided by the University to support appropriate use of IP, commercialisation and entrepreneurship; and Make clear to students and staff what the benefits are for engaging in the commercialisation process.
