1 Actively managed since 1983
Long Lake Management Actively managed since 1983

2 Integrated Aquatic Vegetation Management Plan
Take multiple approaches to: Managing water quality, nuisance plants, noxious weeds Evaluate conditions & results to develop annual work plans, taking into account: Environmental impacts Feasibility Cost-benefit outcomes of all work performed

3 Nuisance Weed Control Herbicidal treatments & mechanical harvests
Water Nymph Curly Pondweed Common Elodea Big Leaf Pondweed Coontail Bladderwort

4 Noxious Weed Control Targeted herbicides on non-native invasive plants
Yellow Flag Iris – homeowner education & maintenance White Fragrant Water Lily – harvest in sections; almost eradicated Brazilian Elodea diver survey

5 2016 Actions Sonar applications to control submerged noxious & native nuisance plants (April, 17.4 acres treated with sonar) Divers completed Brazilian Elodea survey (June, Ecology grant) Remaining permitted 33 acres were to be treated with Aquathol When county declined use of Aquathol, funds were moved to harvesting because too late in season to apply other herbicides Mechanical harvesting of 48.5 acres during 2 sessions, primarily for outbreak of Water Nymph (Nyads) Pre-July 4: 11 days with 1 harvester (130,000 lbs) Late August: 13 days with 2 harvesters (130,000 lbs)

6 2017 Actions White Fragrant Water Lilies Sonar
Aquathol, tried & found effective Gaining control of Curly Pondweed & Water Nymph Big Leaf Pondweed eliminated but seedbed still present Harvesting Planned for 2-3 applications as needed in 2017 (pre-July 4, mid and late summer) Only had to re-harvest about 2 acres White Fragrant Water Lilies Removed in sections to avoid floating islands of lily tubers Almost eradicated after 10-year effort

7 Algae Blooms in Long Lake
Green & Blue-Green

8 What Contributes to Algae Blooms?
Phosphorus in the lake From bottom From runoff From failed septic systems Sunlight Water temperature Climate change?

9 Future Plans LMD plans: Encourage residents to:
Continue herbicide treatments Continue harvesting Aluminum Sulfate treatment in (last in 2008) Educate residents Encourage residents to: Maintain septic systems Select low-phosphorous fertilizers and use judiciously Slope yards to avoid runoff to lake Manage downspout drainage
