Today you will use your knowledge of forces, velocity, and acceleration to design a catapult Agenda Catapult Challenge Introduction Rules of Challenge Research Catapults and Design Have out the following: Pen/pencil HOMEWORK: None

2 Catapult Challenge!

3 Goal Goal: Build a catapult that can launch a ping-pong ball so that it hits the target in our game. The Challenge – - Score at least once (out of 3 attempts) with the “ping-pong ball accuracy and precision challenge”. - The higher your score, the more points your group earns.

4 You will be working in groups ranging from 3 to 4 students
Format and Time You will be working in groups ranging from 3 to 4 students Each group will have the exact same starting materials but will be able to “purchase” more supplies. Practice launching will start on Thursday, June 16th Your final grade will be a combination of your research, score from launch, and behavior/effort.

5 Beginning Supplies – you will be given the following supplies
x3 All tables will have glue and scissors at them for you to use x10 x3 x3 You will be given a sheet with 15 “credits” to use towards additional supply purchases.

6 Buying more supplies... Use “credits” to buy more supplies from the “Science Depot”. You will have a form with your credit balance on it for you. Use the credits wisely, your group only has fifteen and will NOT get any more Using supplies not given to your group or purchased at the “Science Depot” will result in a zero.

1 credit = 1 large rubber band 1 credit = 3 popsicle sticks 1 credit = 30 cm string 2 credits = 1 tongue depressor 1 credit = 20 cm duct tape 2 credits = 1 spoon 1 credit = 30 cm masking tape 3 credits = 1 plate 1 credit = 1 pipe cleaner

8 Constraints and Rules Launchers can only be made out of the supplies given at the start and purchased at the “Science Depot” store. All launchers can only be operated by one person at a time. Bonus of +5 if it can be operated by ONE FINGER on the base from the surface of a desk.

9 There is no launching allowed in non designated areas.
Rules For Launching There is no launching allowed in non designated areas. The only launching area is taped off and groups must get permission to do any practice launches. Any groups practicing may take only TWO practice launches.

10 Phase #1 - Designing the Launcher
Research – complete your catapult research using your Chrome Book and the Power Point Presentation. Each person must hand in their own copy to be graded. Sketch of launcher with all materials labeled. List of additional materials (if any) the group needs along with the appropriate number of credits to purchase the materials

11 Phase #2 - Building the Launcher
Begin building the launcher. Use the tools provided at each table to build the launcher and stay at the group’s assigned table. DO NOT LAUNCH ANYTHING If the group needs to use more credits to buy supplies, send up ONE representative to the store with a specific shopping list. Your catapult should have your NAMES, TEAM NAME, and CLASS displayed clearly. You should decorate your catapult using markers.

12 Put all tools back in the correct locations at your table.
Phase #2 - Clean Up Put all tools back in the correct locations at your table. Put all supplies and launchers into the class bins with the class number and group members names. Clean up any scrap materials and put them in the trash.

13 Phase #3 - Launching One group can launch at a time, no other students may enter the launching area. Each group will have 3 attempts to launch their ping-pong ball and hit the target. The target score is measured based upon where the ping-pong balls final resting spot is. Mrs. Petit has the final say.
