1 THE REASON FOR SEASONS

2 AURORA AUSTRALIS ICEBREAKER

3 To transport expeditioners to and from base camps in Antarctica
ROLE To transport expeditioners to and from base camps in Antarctica Fitted with labs for biological, oceanographic and meteorologic research.

4 Can break through ice up to 1.2 metres thick
AURORA AUSTRALIS Can break through ice up to 1.2 metres thick QUESTION: Why does the Aurora Australis operate for only half of the year?

5 KEYWORDS: AXIS An imaginary ‘rod’ or line passing through the Earth’s poles and around which it spins

6 KEYWORDS: EQUATOR An imaginary circle around the Earth, halfway between the North Pole and the South Pole

7 KEYWORDS: HEMISPHERE The Earth is separated into two imaginary halves above and below the equator.

8

9

10 The path the Earth follows around the sun.
KEYWORDS: ORBIT The path the Earth follows around the sun.

11 What causes the seasons?
QUESTION What causes the seasons?

12 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The earth orbits the sun in a slightly elliptical path. Closer to the sun at certain times BUT

13 BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Does NOT explain the seasons It is not summer and winter both at the same time in the northern and southern hemispheres

14 EARTH’S TILT Seasonal changes are mainly caused by Earth’s tilt.

15

16

17 EARTH’S TILT As the earth orbits around the Sun on a tilted axis (23.5 degrees). The axis points in the same direction the whole time .

18 EARTH’S TILT Sometimes the top half of the earth/axis is pointing towards the sun, while at other times it points away.

19 EARTH’S TILT During our summer, the southern hemisphere is tilted towards the sun.

20 EARTH’S TILT Our summer: Southern hemisphere is pointed towards the sun.

21 EARTH’S TILT Summer: Light is more intense and more effective at heating the ground for longer (longer days)

22

23 DEMONSTRATION Identify when it is Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter in Australia/Antarctica Discuss the tilt in the Earth’s axis and the angle of the Sun’s rays for each season. Identify for Europe

24 REASON FOR SEASONS Worksheet
Draw yourself and explain how the tilt of the earth causes the seasons. Keywords axis, orbit, hemisphere. Research and demonstrate how the angle of light and heat energy changes and affects the seasons in the southern hemisphere.

25 QUESTIONS Why does The Aurura Australis Icebreaker only travel for half the year? Explain why there are days in the year the sun does not rise. Why are there days when the sun does not set? During which seasons are they?

26 QUESTION Why does The Aurura Australis Icebreaker only travel for half the year? Temperatures are warmer over summer. The ice sheets have retreated making it possible for it to carry out its survey and research work

27 QUESTIONS Explain why in Antarctica there are days in the year the sun does not rise. Why are there days when the sun does not set? During which seasons are they? Because of the earth’s tilt of 23.5 degrees Antarctica is “tucked” away from the suns rays during winter and fully exposed in summer.
