1 EARTH'S ROTATION AND REVOLUTION

2 Earth’s Rotation Rotation is the spinning of the Earth on its axis.
The time for one rotation is 24 hours. Earth is tilted on it’s axis 23.5° Click image to view Earth’s rotation.

3 Earth’s Revolution Revolution is one object going around another.
A revolution occurs as the earth moves around the sun. Time for one revolution = 365 days

4 SPACE EARTH MOVEMENTS

5 Round One 1. The Earth spinning on its axis.
Rotation Revolution 2. Going around a larger body. Rotation Revolution Revolution 3. 24 hours. Round One Rotation Revolution 4. Causes the Earth’s seasons. Rotation Revolution 5. Creates a year. Rotation Revolution 6. The moon going around Earth. Rotation Revolution

7 What Causes Seasons?

8 We know that the reason we have day and night is because the Earth
rotates. Rotate means to turn. The Earth rotating on its ______ gives us day and night. axis Earth’s axis is the imaginary line that goes through the center of the Earth.

9 But guess what! Rotating isn’t the only way the Earth moves in space!
The Earth also revolves. Revolve – When one object moves around another object

10 How long does one revolution take?
It takes the Earth one year, or 365 days to orbit the sun. Does anyone know what orbit means? Orbit - The path that an object follows as it revolves around another object.

11 All over the world, people experience the four seasons.

12 Winter…

13 Spring…

14 Summer…

15 and fall.

16 That tilt gives us seasons!
But why do we have four seasons? It’s because the Earth’s axis is tilted. Take a good look at our globe. It‘s not tilted like that because it looks nice. No way. That’s the way the Earth is tilted in space. That tilt gives us seasons!

17 Look at this diagram. Notice how the Earth is always tilted in the same direction. As the Earth __________ the part of Earth tilted toward the sun changes. revolves

18 During part of the year the North Pole tilts towards the sun
During part of the year the North Pole tilts towards the sun. This season is ________. summer

19 During another part of the year, the North Pole points away from the sun. This season is ______.
winter

20 When it is summer in North America, we are tilted towards the rays of the hot, bright sun.
Sun’s rays S

21 When it is winter in North America, we are tilted away from the sun’s rays.
