3 Design Goal Build a Rube Goldberg device that will activate a graphing calculator. Our project, affectionately dubbed Tiger’s Wood, starts by releasing a mallet from a predetermined height. The mallet then tees off a golf ball… …which rolls down a backboard… …into a piece of curved PVC pipe… …and knocks over a small board… …that springs a mouse trap… …that pulls a piece of wire… …which releases another golf ball… …that rolls down and hits a piston… …thereby causing a spring to recoil… …which causes a rod to thrust out… …pressing the on button of the calculator… …finally achieving our goal.

4 Calculations The project illustrates several concepts in real life situations such as: Conservation of Angular Momentum (Mallet) Projectile Motion (Teeing off the golf ball) Conservation of translational energy (Movement of the golf ball) Conservation of rotational energy (Rolling of the golf balls) Conservation of linear momentum (Collision of golf ball and the board) Torque (Springing of mousetrap)

5 Construction Issues Original base was 1m x 1m x 1m instead of the required 0.5m x 0.5m x 0.8 m. Accurate measurements for each framework piece. Insuring all trajectories of the golf ball was correct.

6 Conclusions The project illustrates several concepts in real life situations. The end project is indeed vastly different from the original blueprint. Very difficult to create the “ideal” contraption. Finishing a large project creates a sense of pride and accomplishment.
