Chapter 33 Trityl Methyl Ether and Trityl Bromide

Purpose In these experiments triphenylmethanol is dissolved in highly acidic medium forming the propeller-shaped triphenylmethyl carbocation. The resulted carbocation reacts quickly with methanol or bromide ion to give the target compounds.

(Moles Product / Moles Starting Material) x 100 = % Yield
Comments Follow pp (microscale). Follow the lab handout for all experimental procedures. Wearing rubber gloves is necessary during this lab. You will work with corrosive and harmful compounds. Determine mp and calculate yield of final products. Low to moderate yields should are typical. (Moles Product / Moles Starting Material) x 100 = % Yield

Safety Concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrobromic acid are corrosive, handle with care. Triphenylmethyl derivatives are corrosive and irritating to eyes, respiratory system and skin. Do not swallow and inhale, avoid contact with skin and eyes. Wear eye protection and rubber gloves.
