1 WHAT TYPE OF ROCK DOES EACH NUMBER REPRESENT
WHAT TYPE OF ROCK DOES EACH NUMBER REPRESENT?  USE THE PROCESSES LABELED ON THE ARROWS AS HELP Bellwork

2 Objectives Students will be able to identify how the earth is affected by long- term and short- term geological cycles and the influence of man.  SPI Label a diagram that depicts the three different rock types. SPI Identify the major processes that drive the rock cycle.  Success Criteria: I can describe how metamorphic rock is formed.

3 Demonstration Tear your Starburst candy in half.
Trade half of your candy with your shoulder partner. Push both halves together and wrap in the original wrapper. Apply heat and pressure from your hands for five minutes. Unwrap the candy and answer the following questions: What does the word “metamorphosis” mean? What part of this activity represented the heat that forms metamorphic rock? What part of this activity represented the pressure that forms metamorphic rock? How was the resulting candy at the end similar to metamorphic rock?

4 Metamorphic Rock

5 Metamorphic Rocks: Rocks that Change
Metamorphic comes from the Greek words meta and morph. Meta means “change” and morph means “form”. We get “metamorphic” meaning “to change form.”

6 Metamorphic Rock: Origins of Metamorphic Rock
Rocks can also go through a process called metamorphism, which means to ____________. ___________ _______ are rocks in which the structure, texture, or composition of the rocks have changed. All three types of rocks can go through metamorphism or can be changed by ______, _________, or a combination of both. change form Metamorphic rocks To insert this slide into your presentation Save this template as a presentation (.ppt file) on your computer. 7 Metamorphic Rock: Two Kinds of Metamorphism Contact metamorphism
___________ ________________occurs when magma intrudes or forces its way into existing rock. The heat of the magma bakes the surrounding rocks causing them to change. ___________ ________________ by contrast takes place over large areas deep within Earth’s crust. Regional metamorphism is associated with mountain building. To insert this slide into your presentation Save this template as a presentation (.ppt file) on your computer. 8 Metamorphic Rock Textures of Metamorphic Rocks
depend on composition of the rock and the amount of heat and pressure that is applied to the rock. __________ = mineral grains arranged in bands or planes (straight lines). Look at pg. 379. ____________ = mineral grains are not arranged in bands or planes Examples of metamorphic rocks: Foliated Nonfoliated To insert this slide into your presentation Save this template as a presentation (.ppt file) on your computer.
