1 Unit 1 Chapter 1 WHAT IS SCIENCE?

2 WHAT IS SCIENCE? About predictability Always evolving
What we “know” today gives us the ability to predict certain things about the world around us Always evolving A continuous stream of ideas that are constantly being reshaped, added to, subtracted from, and built upon

3 PREDICTABILITY

4 HOW TO THINK LIKE A SCIENTIST
Be curious + Be skeptical Be flexible = CRITICAL THINKING Ask questions, look for possible explanations, don’t be afraid to let go of old ideas for new ones

5 HOW TO ACT LIKE A SCIENTIST
OBSERVATION Careful watching of something around us, in the environment, in animals, or in ourselves, in an objective way. standard units and equipment to measure things

6 HOW TO ACT LIKE A SCIENTIST
HYPOTHESIS An educated guess explaining what you are observing or how to change what you are observing drinking two cups of coffee makes my heart beat fast

7 HOW TO ACT LIKE A SCIENTIST
EXPERIMENT testing your hypothesis by designing and carrying out an experiment experimental and control groups, variables and how they effect experiment, what baseline data needed, measurements should be repeatable and relevant

8 HOW TO ACT LIKE A SCIENTIST
CONCLUSION judgment made on the basis of your experiment as to whether your hypothesis is right or wrong CORRELATION= two things that tend to happen together CAUSE-EFFECT=one thing or event actually causes the other to happen Every time I go ice skating I get cold, I bruise my bottom=correlation Every time I go ice skating I fall down AND bruise my bottom=cause and effect which is a better predictor than correlation

9 SCIENTIFIC METHOD Logical 4 step approach observation hypothesis
experiment conclusion

10 SCIENTIFIC METHOD Why is it important? predictions allow us to make decisions about our future.

11 GREAT “TRUTHS” At various times in history, scientist “knew” these things---although today we “know” differently Unit I-1.7 HANDOUT

12

13 ACTIVITY Generate a list of adjectives or nouns that come to mind when you think of science and scientists Unit I-1.9

14 ACTIVITY Now using those adjectives and nouns, draw a picture of what a scientist might look like

15 SOME FAMOUS BIOLOGICAL SCIENTISTS, THEIR DISCOVERIES AND TRENDS
DICUSSION QUESTION ? Discuss (in your group) how you feel the following characteristics influence what you imagine a scientist being like? Be able to explain to the class. -Gender -Ethnicity/Race -Age -Income -Education -Athleticism -Creativity Unit I-1.10 Each group will be assigned a scientist

16 Unit I-1.10 Each group will be assigned a scientist

17 SOME FAMOUS BIOLOGICAL SCIENTISTS, THEIR DISCOVERIES AND TRENDS
Create a poster on your assigned scientist Unit I-1.10 Each group will be assigned a scientist

18 HOW OBSERVANT ARE YOU? One of the most important characteristics of a scientist is the ability to observe objectively. Number 1-8 and answer the questions….. Unit I-1.13

19 HOW OBSERVANT ARE YOU? Without looking down, what color socks are you wearing today? When you fold your arms, which arm do you put on top? When you clasp your hands in front of you, which thumb is on top? Which direction does Lincoln face on a penny? How many sides does a pencil have? What color is the top light on a traffic light? How many sides does a stop sign have? In your bathroom, which side of the faucet is the hot water knob located?

20 HOW OBSERVANT ARE YOU?

21 THINK CREATIVELY! A scientist needs to think creatively and see new solutions to old problems. How would you solve this problem? How can you tip a glass of water over without spilling it? Unit I-1.14 Each group will receive a problem to solve

22 THINK CREATIVELY! How would you solve this problem?
You have a sheet of newspaper. How can you place it on the floor in such a way that you and a friend can both stand on it, BUT no matter how hard you try, your friend cannot touch you?
