Typical Sequence of Events Leading to Alcohol Facilitated Sexual Assaults Sexual Assault Occurs!! = Victim decision points = Intervention points Does battle buddy / bystanders check on victim to ensure they made it home safely? = Subject decision points Do es staff duty walk thru / check barracks during the weekend? Victim goes to barracks, residence or isolated area with subject Do first line leaders check on subordinates during the weekend? Subject becomes acquainted with victim, recognizes state of intoxication Does battle buddy / bystanders recognize victim is impaired and intervene? Victim tells friends they are not that intoxicated and want to go with subject Does battle buddy / bystanders recognize victim is becoming impaired and intervene? Subject attempts to separate victim from other friends / acquaintances, perhaps by volunteering to escort victim home Victim continues excessive drinking, perhaps engaging in mutual flirtatious behavior with subject, who may or may not be consuming alcohol Does battle buddy / bystanders recognize victim is becoming impaired and intervene? Subject mixes/provides drinks to victim, or offers to buy victim drinks Victim consumes excessive amount of alcoholic beverages while at club, hotel room, house party (inhibitions lowered) Does battle buddy / bystanders discourage binge drinking? Does chain of command routinely brief unit members on risk-taking behavior commonly associated with alcohol facilitated sexual assaults Subject, most often a known acquaintance of the victim, departs to club or party, perhaps volunteers to accompany the victim Victim departs to bar(s) or club(s) alone or with known associates Victim consumes alcohol beverages in barracks or residence Potential subject becomes acquainted with victim. Perhaps victim invites subject to party. Victim and friends plan to attend party (barracks, residence, hotel, beach, club, etc) Potential subject becomes acquainted with victim
