1 DG Environment, Unit D.2 Marine Environment and Water Industry
8th meeting of the Working Group DIKE Reporting on monitoring Link with Pilot Project - New Knowledge for an integrated management of human activities in the sea European Commission DG Environment Marine and Water Industry Unit 7 – 8 October 2013

2 Objective The purpose of the Pilot Project is to develop new concept and decision-making tools for integrated environmental monitoring for the MSFD to support management of human activities in EU marine waters. The project will develop integrated monitoring strategies in selected pilot regions, based on existing sampling across various disciplines (physical, chemical, biological) and scope the potential for joint monitoring programmes (within and between Member States).

Inventory & analysis make maximum use of existing inventories: national, OSPAR, EU, projects, eg. liaise with OSPAR ICG-COBAM deliver sub-regional overview and in depth comparison of MSFD needs vs what monitoring delivers align with WG DIKE reporting formats as much as possible reality check: will we be able to use existing meta data systems (EMODNET/SEADATANET, OSPAR information system)? Work Package 2 Integration Multi-disciplinary: Assess the opportunities; Across states: Assess the opportunities for joint planning and joint monitoring across Member States; Tools: Adopt and/or develop planning and evaluation tools which will address the required precision and spatial and temporal resolution of integrated monitoring; Gaps & Needs: Identify emerging monitoring gaps and needs to be addressed.
