10 Analyze this Prompt In the article “If there’s an inspiration deficit in our politics, blame it on the young” Lawrence Martin describes the Millennial generation as self-obsessed and too lazy to fight for change.  In his article, he explains that the youth of today are only interested in themselves.  He describes today’s youth as “lazy, vain, and entitled, apparently interested in nothing but their Idol shows, movies with tacky humor and the latest technological toys.” In a well organized essay, explain Martin’s argument, and discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with his analysis of the Millennials. 12 Prewriting = anything you do to prepare to write a draft
includes thinking, taking notes, talking to others, brainstorming, outlining, and gathering information (e.g., interviewing people, researching in the library, assessing data).

13 Prewriting strategy -Free writing
√Look at the prompt and analyze it briefly. For an in-class essay, analyze for no longer than 5 minutes. Now ready? Set? Brainstorm and write. Do not edit! Keep your fingers typing or your pen moving! After you are done, go back and read your writing. Highlight and underline certain ideas that stick out or that you have repeated. Make a more organized list or freewrite with the good ideas you have come up with. This is now the beginning of your essay.

14 Free Write Millennials are self obsessed and too lazy to fight for change because… or Millennials are not narcissistic and entitled because… Highlight something in your free write that was especially meaningful to you. Discuss

15 Prewriting strategy- Brainstorming
Brainstorming is based on free association. This is when you let one thought naturally lead to another. When you brainstorm, you generally write a list, or cluster, or diagram, or outline. Students will do this type of Brainstorming in the Reading part of the class

16 Prewriting Strategy- Clustering
Politics Modern uses Rather than writing a free- flowing paragraph or list of concepts, start with a central word As related concepts pop in your head, indicate them as branches, arrows, bubbles, etc. You may have an “ah ha!” moment Persuasion Communication Rhetoric History Directions: Each slide is activated by a single mouse click. Many students are visual learners and thinkers. Therefore, more visual processes of invention may help them ask questions to generate ideas, explore topics, and make connections. 20 Prewriting Strategy: Asking Questions
Form questions using who, what, when, where, why, how. Hint: Relating the subject to yourself can help you ask the question. Why is this important to me? How does it relate to me?/How does this affect me daily? How do I feel about it? /Do I feel good/bad/indifferent about it? Why? How might my connection to this change in the future? How did I feel about this in the past?

21 Journal Entry -Asking Questions
Form questions related to our essay topic using who, what, when, where, why, how. For example What is a millennial? How does being a millennial the way I do things? Write 5 questions about the topic of Millennials.

22 Other Prewriting Strategies
